About Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach is a beachfront community in San Diego, California. Also known as O.B., this neighborhood offers spectacular views of the sand and the Pacific Ocean.

Ocean Beach is comprised of single family homes, two story apartments, bungalows, and small cottages. It was established in 1887 by two developers; and is located north of Point Loma and south of Mission Bay. It was once a popular spot for hippies and this area was referred to as the local Haight-Ashbury.

The San Diego Unified School District is the second largest in the state. Students attend facilities like Point Loma High School as well as highly ranked Ocean Beach Elementary School and Correia Middle School. There are hundreds of private institutions like the Calvary Christian Academy, Escondido Adventists Academy, the Montessori American School, and Halstrom Academy. Public universities include the University of California (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU) as well as the San Diego Community College District.

Ocean Beach residents oppose chain businesses and this community has many independent retail stores. On Newport Avenue you’ll find many restaurants, coffee houses, bike & surf shops, bars, tattoo & piercing shops, and head shops. There is also an international youth hostel.

Residents are minutes away from Robb Park which offers many sports courts, fields, playgrounds, a fitness center, and a skate park. The Loma Club features a nine-hole golf course as well as lessons. There are many events throughout the year in Ocean Beach like the OB Farmer’s Market, the OB Kite Festival, the OB Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off, OB Oktoberfest, and the Fourth of July Fireworks.

San Diego is California’s second largest city and the nation’s eighth. Its economy relies on tourism, manufacturing, international trade, and military defense related activities.
